Prince Charles had much to celebrate on his fourth birthday. His parents, who had missed his birthday the previous year while on their way home from their first Royal Tour of Canada, had kept their day clear of public engagements and hosted a children's tea party at Buckingham Palace for their new Heir-Apparent. Princess Elizabeth had ascended to the throne earlier that year when her father, King George VI, died shortly after her return to England from Canada. Her first Royal Tour of Canada marked her last full tour as a Princess.
It is unknown what the mysterious bauble is in this perfectly candid childhood photo of King Charles III.
